Opposition leader Venancio Mondlane, who came second in last month's disputed elections, has claimed in a social media video that he escaped an attempted assassination in South Africa - where he sought refuge after the polls.

Venâncio Mondlane, the independent Mozambican opposition presidential candidate who fled the country after last month’s disputed elections, plans to return this week as the gas-rich nation faces growing unrest.

In a Facebook live broadcast on Monday night, Mondlane told viewers  that he escaped an assassination attempt in South Africa where he is in hiding after challenging last month's election results.
