The storm surge, wind damage and inland flooding from Hurricane Helene have been catastrophic, flooding neighborhoods, stranding residents, destroying homes and toppling trees in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee. Dozens have been killed.

More than 100 people are dead and hundreds of others remain missing, including 600 in one North Carolina county alone, as southeastern portions of the United States recover from the destruction caused by Hurricane Helene,

At least 30 people have died in the area around Asheville, North Carolina. “Those communities no longer resemble what they were a week ago,” one official said.
