The production facility that prints The Providence Journal and the Boston Herald is closing, laying off 136 workers.

The closure is just the latest cutback at the 195-year old newspaper, which in recent years has laid off staff, trimmed benefits, and lost thousands of readers under the ownership of Gannett.

The Providence Journal's production facility will cease operations in March, resulting in the loss of 136 jobs and shifting the newspaper's printing.

The Providence Journal will no longer be printing in Providence. The printing plant, located on Kinsley Avenue, will officially be shutting down in March, according to Gannett’s owner. 136 full- and part-time employees will lose their jobs,

“The decision to close our printing facility in Providence was prompted by an insurmountable supply chain issue. The press utilizes specific plates produced by a single manufacturer, who will be discontinuing their production — rendering our press inoperable,” a Gannett spokesperson told NBC 10 in a statement.
